Celebrating Excellence
Highlights from the Best of Direct Awards Ceremony & Holiday Party

Every year, the DMAW honors leaders who have made a significant impact on the direct marketing industry through their service and innovation. This year’s event celebrated these achievements. Hosted by Allison Porter and Tiffany Neill for the third consecutive year, the evening also supported Nick’s Place, a nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals in recovery from addiction. Nick’s Place was established by Rhea McVicker as a tribute to her son, Nick.

The night’s theme centered on innovation, strategy, and creativity. A memorable moment was the tribute to Hal Malchow, a political fundraiser and direct marketing strategist. His work was honored with the words, “What we do in direct marketing is most important as we become fragmented, culturally, politically, and spiritually.” His legacy will continue to inspire the industry.

Jill Amato and Jim Chmielweski received the Board Achievement Awards for their exceptional leadership. Jill was recognized for co-chairing the Marketing Opportunities with Bridge, surpassing 20% of the revenue goals, while Jim was honored for his 12 years of service as a speaker, volunteer, and awardee at the DMAW Maxi Awards.

The event also celebrated rising talent. Victoria Vincent, the Rising Star awardee, was recognized for leading Young DMAW Group activities and supporting DMAW programs like the List Bazaar. Zakeia Rodgers, the Emerging Leader awardee, was celebrated for her work with DMAW’s Young Professionals Advisory Committee and mentoring young Black women in leadership roles.

Other awards recognized commitment to the industry. Planet Direct, named Partner of the Year, was honored for its consistent engagement with DMAW through judging the MAXI Awards, speaking at events, and serving on committees. April Moore was acknowledged for her volunteer work with the MAXI Awards, the Bridge Conference, and the DMAW blog.

The evening also recognized individuals who have driven significant change in the industry. David Whitehead received the Changemaker Award for his role as the inaugural chair of the Nonprofit Alliance and his work leading Bridge Conference activities. Michelle Carpenter, the O’Hara Leadership Awardee, was celebrated for her teaching and mentoring at ODU, where she continues to guide students while navigating the ever-changing world of direct marketing.

The Industry All-Star award was presented to Kathy Swayze, a role model and ambassador for DMAW. Kathy co-founded the Bridge Conference and served in numerous leadership roles, including as AFP DC President. It was personally meaningful for me, as Kathy had encouraged me to contribute to the DMAW magazine during one of my first events with the organization.

The final award was the Hall of Leaders Award, several past recipients stood up before John Thompson received and shared remarks about being honored as the 2024 recipient. He shared 3 important tips – when life gets you down, get back up; learn from every failure; and never burn a bridge, it’s a small industry.

The evening was a powerful reminder of the dedication, creativity, and leadership driving the direct marketing industry forward. Each awardee’s achievements highlighted the continued growth and evolution of this dynamic field.
